Dubai: The Dubai Appeal Court has upheld a three-month jail term for a woman lawyer, who disfigured a beauty specialist’s face with a piece of glass in a drunken rage on New Year’s Eve.

In October, the Dubai Court of First Instance jailed the 26-year-old Ukrainian defendant for assaulting the victim, also a Ukrainian. She was also fined Dh1,000 for drinking alcohol.

She appealed the primary judgement before the Appeal Court, but it was dismissed because she had filed it later than the permissible period of 15 days.

The accused will be deported after she serves her sentence.

The incident happened during a New Year’s Eve party in the 29-year-old victim’s flat where she lived with her Moldovan husband. The lawyer arrived with her friends — a Moldovan couple. At around 3am, she asked the victim to speak with her about a private matter concerning her (victim’s) husband, who she alleged had cheated on the victim with the Moldovan woman present at the party.

The victim immediately confronted her husband, who dismissed the lawyer’s allegations. The Moldovan woman also denied that she had been having an affair with him.

The lawyer, who was drunk, then struck the victim in the face with a liquor glass, resulting in a deep cut to her cheek.

The husband rushed his injured wife to hospital and police apprehended the lawyer.

The Moldovan couple and the husband testified that they heard the lawyer cursing the victim in Russian and telling her that she hated her.
