Muscat: The Ministry of Manpower has penalised a total of 199 businesses in the private sector, for not complying to Omanisation laws.
The ministry said in a statement that the businesses employ more than fifty per cent expatriates in senior positions in violation of the country’s law.
The businesses will face penalties including suspension of issuing new work permits and renewing labour cards.
According to the law, at least ten per cent of jobs should be allocated to Omanis at any given business.
In January, Oman’s Minister of Manpower Shaikh Abdullah Al Bakri banned the issuance of new visas for workers in 87 professions in the private sector for six months.
The temporary suspension was intended to allow the chance for Omanis to be employed in their place.
The businesses that were impacted cut across many sectors including media, accounting, medical, insurance, information and aviation.
In October of last year Oman’s council of ministers approved a plan to employ 25,000 Omanis in both private and public sector jobs.
