Dubai: Art Dubai returns, headlining the city's cultural scene from March 21 to 24.

The art fair is recognised as the leading event in the region's booming contemporary art community.

Gulf News will run a series of special reports during the sixth edition that features 75 galleries from 32 countries. The reports will examine the current art environment through various concepts including the ArtBus, Arabic Art Glossary platform and Cartography of the City's Art World.

Held under the patronage of His Highness Shaikh Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, the event is part of Art Week, the umbrella initiative that promotes the region as an art destination.

This year, Art Dubai has a new programme of artists' and curators' residencies; commissioned projects; performing art tours; workshops; Abraaj Capital Art Prize; and the Global Art Forum.

The critically acclaimed Forum was launched by Art Dubai at its inaugural fair in 2007. It brings artists and art commentators together, providing a platform for contemporary discourse with an emphasis on issues in the Middle East and Asia.

The first day of the event will have an exclusive preview for women with tours by curators and art experts. Highlights of the art fair also include a sci-fi inspired workshops titled Morocco to the Moon for families and children, and the debut screening room for video programmes called The Hatch based on an ordinary stairwell. Last year, Art Dubai had more than 20,000 visitors and 70 galleries from 30 countries.
