Manama: A suicidal driver on Tuesday slammed his car in the motorcycle escort of the Qatari ambassador to Belgium, local media reported.

At least three of the federal policemen are in critical condition in the incident just before noon at the gates of Château de Laeken, the home of the Belgian royal family just outside the centre of the Belgian capital, Brussels.

Reports said that the driver, reported to be 39 years old, told the Brussels and federal police that he wanted to commit suicide and that he slammed into the policeman in a "gesture of hopelessness."

According to the police, the man will be charged with attempted murder.

"The Qatari ambassador who submitted his letters of credential to the King was inside the palace when the incident happened," a spokesperson for the palace said.

The authorities said that they were investigating the rare incident.
