Dubai: Al Wasl hopes of reaching the 2008 Asian champions league quarterfinals were dashed on Wednesday night when they lost 2-1 to Kuwait Club in Kuwait city.

Al Wasl showed poor form and their three Brazilians, Oliviera, Diaz and Rogerio were off colour and didn't create any danger.

Saipa of Iran are on top of Group B with eight points despite being held at home to a 1-1 draw by Al Quwa Al Jawiya of Iraq. Kuwait club raised their points tally to five and the Iraqi club also have five.

Winner

Al Wasl have three points after one win and three defeats and are at the bottom of Group B.

"Our players missed a good chance to revive hopes of reaching the quarterfinals if they beat Kuwait club due to the drawn match between Saipa and Al Quwa Al Jawiya which could reduce the gap between us and the top place to two points, unfortunately we lost and our hopes have vanished," said Esmail Rashid, the Al Wasl team manager, after the match.

Eisa Ali opened the scoring for Al Wasl from the spot after five minutes. The Kuwaitis didn't take long time to level, Khalid Ajab grabbing the equaliser when his shot was deflected by Walhid Esmail and went in to the left of keeper Majid Naser.

The Kuwaitis pressed hard and wasted several scoring opportunities.

Jarrah Atiqi crossed from the left and Abdul Rahman Al Awadhy launched a swift shot for the winner.
