Dubai: Dubai Customs have foiled an attempt to smuggle 10 kg of heroin through Dubai Airport into Rome, where the suspect was arrested in a collaborative international operation.

The drugs were hidden in two suitcases of a European passenger coming from Peshwar, Pakistan, who took a transit in Dubai where Dubai Customs inspectors aborted his bid to smuggle the heroin to Rome, Italy, through Zurich, Switzerland.

The bid was discovered after the passenger, who was supposed to travel to Rome asked to change his flight to Zurich and for his luggage to be transported with him, said Ali Maqhawi, Director of Airport Operations at Dubai Customs, during a press conference yesterday.

Dubai Customs, in coordination with Dubai Police Anti-narcotics Department, informed the concerned authorities in Switzerland to take the necessary measures and inspection procedures.

The passenger, however, misled customs authorities at Zurich airport, where he approached the transit zone and booked a new ticket to Rome, where he was arrested due to the high level of coordination between all concerned authorities in the three countries,
