Dubai: Tablet salesmen in the UAE may soon have to alter their sales pitch to a new audience — children. And it is not to introduce them to the product.

Regardless of the make, kids are familiar with a tablet's interface. At the Apple Store in Ibn Battuta Mall, the four demo iPad units are the most-used gadgets by children ages two and older, interacting with the popular Talking Tom Cat and playing games like Fruit Ninja and Angry Birds.

Intuitive feature

The intuitive feature of a tablet — with its touch screen — provides an easy interface for children. Titus Okumu, a salesman at the Apple Store, told Gulf News, "Even children are my customers. Apart from games, there are educational apps. I always advise parents to download the ones [apps] that are age-appropriate."

Going by the current trend of salesmen increasingly catering to parents buying tablets for their children, the focus is on available choices. Norlito Alunday, a salesman at a Dubai-based multi-brand electronics store, told Gulf News that price is often the consideration for parents.

"There are many more tablets in the market now, varying in price and features. Size is also important. The 10-inch tablets do well. Many students now use tablets."

Android platform

Gulf News visited another consumer electronics store in Dubai and spoke to salesman Farhan Shaikh, who explained that tablets are being judged by the operating system.

"The Android platform is common to several tablets like those made by Sony, Asus, Acer, ViewSonic and BlackBerry to name a few. With the Android platform, parents can lock each app when deciding the level of access for their kids."
