Dubai: A man was arrested in Dubai Airport while attempting to smuggle about 2.5 kilograms of cocaine from Sao Paolo to Ghana, Dubai Police said yesterday.

The man was travelling through Dubai Airport's Terminal 3 on December 20 when he was apprehended following tip made to the General Anti-Narcotics Department.

A duty officer at the airport noticed that the suspect appeared nervous and matched his features to the description they had received. The suspect had two carry-on bags, which appeared unusually thick in some places.

Five plastic bags were found stuffed inside the lining of the two carry-on bags. The first contained 625 grams of cocaine, the second had 950 grams, two smaller ones a total of 656 grams, and two other bags hidden inside the backpack straps, which contained a total of 220 grams of cocaine, bringing the total amount to 2,478 grams worth over Dh370,000.

The suspect denied any knowledge of the nature of the powder he was carrying, adding that a person from Ghana gave it to him in Brazil and asked him to deliver it another man in Accra, Ghana, who would identify him from the clothes he is wearing.

The General Anti-Narcotics Department also received a letter of thanks from the South Africa Police Services Organised Crime Unit, for valuable information that resulted in the arrest of S.P, an African woman arrested in Johannesburg with six kilograms of cocaine hidden in her luggage.

Another letter was received from the Philippines for providing information that allowed the authorities to arrest A.A.O., an African woman who was attempting to smuggle three kilograms of crystal-meth into the Philippines.
