Manama: Qatar’s Emir Shaikh Hamad Bin Khalifa Al Thani arrived on Friday afternoon in Tunisia as the North African country celebrates the first anniversary of its revolution.
Shaikh Hamad was welcomed by Tunisia’s president, prime minister and parliament speaker in a highly remarkable appreciation of the visit.
“It is with great pleasure that I greet on behalf of the Qatari people the people of Tunisia, wishing them further prosperity,” Shaikh Hamad said in an arrival statement.
The visit, the first by a Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) leader since a new parliament was elected and a new government sworn in, will seek to bolster bilateral ties and will address issues of common interest, both countries said.
Tunisia’s cabinet on Thursday said that the talks with the Qatar will include signing nine memoranda of understandings and discussing five more.
Investments and contribution to projects in Tunisia will be the main areas of the accords, the government spokesman said.
Several leaders are expected to be in Tunis on Saturday as the country marks the first year following the ousting of the then president Zine Al Abidine Bin Ali who fled Tunisia after 28 days of street protests against his regime of 23 years.
