Abu Dhabi: Mohammad Azmi scored a 6-3, 6-4 win over Mohammad Muflehi to clinch the men's singles title in the annual Mafraq Open Tennis tournament that ended at the hotel's courts on Friday.

Playing aggressively, Azmi blazed through the opening set 6-3 with some heavy hitting down the line. Muflehi offered some resistance in the second set, but could not keep up the tempo and went down 6-4.

Earlier in the semifinals, Azmi overcame a stiff challenge from young Charles Oswald before winning 6-3, 6-3. In the other semifinals, Muflehi beat Russell Hyde 6-3, 6-3.

Muflehi, however, did end up on the podium after winning the doubles title in partnership with Mabrook Ali.

Muflehi and Ali got the better of Tony Ghusais and Ferdie Noronha 6-4, 6-4 in a closely-contested encounter that lasted almost 2 hours. The winning duo held their nerves, especially during the crucial points, to clinch the title for the first time.
