Dibba: Doctors saved the life of a young woman who consumed cleaning liquid in an attempt to end her life.

The Moroccan woman, in her early twenties, works with a hotel in Dibba Fujairah and was rushed to the hospital in a critical condition but is now stated to be out of danger, said Major Saif Al Zahmi, Director of Dibba Fujairah Police.

He said that the woman confessed to taking the extreme step citing problems in her life including disputes with her family.

"She is better now and discharged from the hospital, but she tried to kill herself and this is against our law and religion," Major Al Zahmi said.

Al Zahmi said that the case had been referred to the Attorney General and the woman charged with attempt to commit suicide.

In the UAE, as in many Muslim countries, attempted suicide is a criminal offence that can carry a penalty of up to six months in jail, a fine of as much as Dh5,000, or both. People who are convicted can face deportation and be blacklisted from re-entering the country.
