Muscat: Georges Bizet's masterpiece Carmen, an entirely new Royal Opera House production, will premiere Saturday to a sold-out audience in Muscat.

The new production is directed and designed by Oscar-winning set designer Gianni Quaranta. The chorus and orchestra of the La Verdi Foundation are conducted by Patrick Fournillier.

Carmen marks the first ever recreation of Bizet's masterpiece in the region, which premiered in Paris in 1875.

Julia Gertseva plays the title role, as a fatally flirtatious Gypsy, Carmen. Marcello Giordani (17th, 21st) and Giancarlo Monslave (19th) alternate in the role of Don José, whose heart is captured by the alluring gypsy.

In turn Carmen's interest is stolen by the masculine matador Escamillo, sung in this production by Nicolas Cavallier.

Monumental sets, costumes

Addressing the media, the interim CEO of the Royal Opera House Muscat, Brett Egan said: "The monumental sets and costumes, designed by Quaranta and built in Rome, arrived in Muscat in 17 sea containers."

"This massive new production - featuring four original sets, over 450 costumes, and a cast of nearly 250 shows the leadership position that ROHM is poised to assume among performing arts organisations worldwide," he added.

"Oman is a fascinating country, rich in art and culture. Its history, unspoiled nature and stunning landscapes fascinate any traveller with the good fortune of visiting it," remarked Gianni Quaranta, Director, Set and Costume Designer.

"In honour of this historic event, I intend to pay homage to the Sultanate and its leadership by making available all of my artistic skills with a great setting, rich and evocative, such that the production of Carmen can contribute to the prestige of Oman," Quaranta said.

Alessio Vlad, Artistic Director added: "The Opera, above all, characterises the European culture, and we welcome with emotion and gratitude the invitation that gives us the chance to share a form of art that so deeply belongs to us. Even more fascinating is the idea of contributing to the birth of a new Opera House that, in an ideal communion."
