Vatayanasana, or the flying horse pose, (vata means "wind" and ayana means "to move") is a deceptive pose, in the sense that the final position is easier to attain than the effort required to attain it. This pose is an excellent hip opener, rids the body of unwanted gases and is beneficial for control of the reproductive organs.

Vatayanasana

  • Stand straight with feet together.
  • Bend the right knee and place the right foot on the left thigh as shown (as though in half lotus position).
  • Hold this position and steady the body. Then place the palms of hands together in front of the chest.
  • Slowly bend left knee and lower the body until right knee rests on the floor.
  • Bring right elbow on top of left elbow, slowly curl your right arm around the left in a way that the palms are in front of your face and touch each other.
  • Hold this final position for 30-60 seconds, breathing normally.
  • Release arms and slowly raise the body, straighten left knee and return to the start position.
  • Release right leg and lower it to the floor.
  • Repeat by bending left leg.

Benefits

  • Strengthens the leg muscles and knee joints.
  • Stretches the hips and the shoulders.
  • Improves balance and determination.

Caution

People with hip, knee or ankle injuries, sciatica, slipped disc or any heart condition should avoid this pose.
