Damascus: The inflation spilling over Arab countries - rich and poor alike - will be discussed at a special Arab Summit to be held in Kuwait in January next year, announced Amr Mousa, Secretary General of the Arab League, on Friday.

He said other topical issues, including upgrading of health services and bridging the information technology gap in the Arab world, will be discussed in the upcoming summit in Kuwait. Improving education will also be tackled.

He told Gulf News that the importance of the Kuwait summit is its spec-ialised approach and the fact that preparations for the summit are made with the support of the business community and non-governmental organisations in the Arab world.

Mousa said the issues to be tackled in Kuwait have a direct impact on the daily lives of the Arab people.

For instance, he said, the development of bio-fuel by western countries has had a severe impact on ordinary people in the Arab world. "The soaring value of imports of grains and other foodstuff items in the Arab world has become a phenomenon. Low- and middle-income people, who form the majority in the Arab world, are badly affected and leaders have to discuss ways of improving food security for their nations," he stressed

Mousa said Arab nations have shown extraordinary patience and people deserve their leaders to guarantee them better quality of life.

He said the agenda of the Kuwait summit will focus on executing specific projects and giving a helping hand to certain countries. "The aim of the summit is help poor Arab communities to [be] at par with the rich ones," he said.

He said more than 250 projects will be discussed by the socio-economic council, comprising the economic and social ministers in the Arab world, prior to the summit next year.
