Manama: Qatar is to set up a diplomacy institute within its foreign ministry, a local daily reported.

The move is part of an overall restructuring of the ministry that will include appointing three undersecretaries to assist the minister, Al Arab daily said on Thursday.

The institute will be tasked with training ministry employees to take up positions in the diplomatic and consular corps and in the international cooperation field.

It will also train diplomats and boost the aptitudes of ministry employees, draft studies and conduct research on diplomacy affairs and international political and economic relations.

The institute will also provide consultancy services to ministries and government and public agencies.

Under the new-look ministry, the minister will have an assistant for foreign affairs, a second assistant for services and a third assistant for international cooperation. However, the post of undersecretary for follow-up affairs will be cancelled.

Each of the African, Asian, European and American affairs will have its own directorate, the daily said.

Two bureaus, one for media and the other security affairs, will be set up while the directorates of international organisations and conferences, international development and international technical cooperation will be moved from the international cooperation ministry to the foreign affairs ministry.

No date was given about the implementation of the new structure.
