Baghdad: At least seven people were killed and 16 injured as gunmen in three cars opened fire on pedestrians in a southern Baghdad district on Sunday.

There were few details of the shooting, which took place in Zaafariniya, a religiously mixed neighbourhood.

Such drive-by shootings have become rare since US and Iraqi forces launched a crackdown on militants in the capital last year.

The shooting came on the same day that a barrage of rocket or mortar bomb fire hit Baghdad's fortified Green Zone.

Hours after the attack, a suicide bombing rocked an army base in Mosul, north of Baghdad, killing at least 10 Iraqi soldiers and wounding 50 others, including five civilians.
