Dubai: Two people were killed and four injured in five traffic accidents over the past week.

An Emirati driver survived with moderate injuries after his car crashed into a metal barrier on Ras Al Khor Street early Tuesday. The man, who was driving a Lexus saloon car, hit the barrier around 3:30am.

On Sunday, a Bangladeshi pedestrian and an Indian driver were killed when a pick-up truck driven by the Indian driver hit the pedestrian on Emirates road in the Sharjah direction, while a biker sustained severe injuries when he was hit by a car in the Palm Island tunnel.

Last week, two women pedestrians — a Filipina and a French citizen — survived with moderate injuries after being run over by cars on Al Rigga and Al Rifa'a streets.

In the first nine months of this year, Indians had the highest number of injuries and casualties with 365.

Statistics

Out of 365, 23 died, 34 sustained severe injuries, 133 moderate injuries, and 175 minor injuries. Out of them, 328 were men and 37 women.

Major General Mohammad Saif Al Zafain, Director of Dubai Police's Traffic Department, said nationalities of drivers are irrelevant when it comes to speeding and other traffic offences.

"It is simply a matter of the driver's adherence to the rules, his commitment to safe driving, respect for other road users and manners in general," Al Zafain told Gulf News.

Emiratis came second with a total of 264 injuries including 14 deaths, 19 severe injuries, 77 moderate injuries and 154 minor injuries that affected 194 men and 70 women.

Pakistanis were third with 242 injuries including 23 deaths, 22 severe injuries, 71 moderate, and 126 minor injuries. Out of them, 225 were men and 17 women.

There were also 93 injuries among Bangladeshis that left nine dead, nine severely injured, 30 moderately and 45 lightly injured, out of which 92 were men and one woman.
