The plot Adapted from Kathryn Stockett's best-selling book of the same name, The Help is the story of Eugenia ‘Skeeter' Phelan (Stone), an aspiring young author, writing during the 1960's at the time of the American civil rights movement. When she returns home from university to find that her beloved maid, Constantine, who more or less raised her as a child, has quit her job and the family, she becomes suspicious after Constantine fails to contact her. In her new job as a columnist for a lifestyle magazine, Skeeter turns to local maid, Aibileen (Davis), for help on readers' questions concerning how to run a home, and the pair soon develop a controversial friendship; but contrary to her enlightened view of the civil rights movement, Skeeter notices that many of her friends have developed a terrible attitude towards their "help" and decides to investigate the lives of the African-American women raising their children. At first the maids are reluctant to speak out, but soon they are rushing to have their voices heard and their complex stories told.
