While the National Assembly is scheduled to elect its speaker and deputy speaker tomorrow, suspense continues over who would be nominated by the PPP for the slot of prime minister.

A leader of the house or prime minister would be elected at a session to be called for the specific purpose by the president for which a date is yet to be set.

Amid speculation about differences in PPP over choice of a PM, Makhdoom Ameen Fahim, a senior party leader and strong contender for the top office, denied he intended to form a bloc in the party if he was ignored.

Talking to the media he said the PPP was united and would remain so whatever the decision about premiership.

Asif Ali Zardari, who is widely believed to toying with the idea of becoming prime minister, could bring in someone in as an interim capacity until his entry into the National Assembly through a by-election in a few months.

Chaudhary Ahmad Mukhtar, an old guard in PPP and also a premiership candidate, said Zardari had the right to nominate anyone.

A private channel, quoting party sources, said the name of Shah Mehmood Qureshi, president of PPP in Punjab, was also under consideration for making him interim prime minister.

Zardari was to chair a meeting of the PPP parliamentary yesterday and a prime miniterial candidate is expected to be nominated when a session for the election of leader of the house is summoned.
