Thiruvananthapuram: The Left Democratic Front government in Kerala, which vowed last year to deal sternly with those using plastic carry bags made of material below a specific thickness, and those dumping wastes violating norms, has reassured its commitment to those policies.

Replying to queries in the state assembly yesterday, Local Administration Minister Paloli Mohammad Kutty said the government would crack down on slaughterhouse wastes. He said careless disposal of slaughter waste was a major cause of pollution.

The minister said rules had been tightened to ensure that waste-disposal norms were adhered to as essential requisite for issuing licences to abattoirs.

Mohammad Kutty said officials have been asked to act tough in cases of reckless waste disposal.

He said more than 72,000 raids have been conducted as part of the plastic ban enforcement.
