Dubai: Former British champion jockey and Dubai regular Ryan Moore successfully underwent surgery on Tuesday to repair a broken humerus and thumb and is expected to be sidelined for eight to nine months as he recuperates.

Moore, who rides for Satish Seemar's Zabeel Stables during the Dubai winter, sustained the injuries in a horrible fall at Glorious Goodwood on Saturday when his mount was brought down during a three-horse pile-up.

However, his mother Jayne has confirmed that the dual surgery went according to play.

"I haven't actually spoken to him, I've spoken to his partner, Michelle, who has been with him all night," Mrs Moore said in the Irish Examiner.

Good spirit

"He came out of surgery at around midnight and all went according to plan — it went extremely well, so the surgeons say.

"That's all I know for now, but at least there were no hiccups."

Prior to the operation at the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford his mother reportered the 38-year-old rider to be in "good spirit."

"He's in good spirits and he's been in the gym," said Mrs Moore.

"He's going to have the two operations. After much consultation they have decided they are going to operate on his shoulder.

"Both are normally day cases but, having the two together, it just depends how he comes out of the anaesthetic. The two injuries are tricky, but treatable."

Moore's set-back has turned the British champion jockey's title race into a two-man battle between reigning champion Paul Hanagan and Brazilian Silvestre de Sousa.

Initial reaction

However, he hopes to be fit for racing in time for the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe in Paris where he will bid for back-to-back wins aboard Workforce, for his main retainer, Michael Stoute.

"The consultants' initial reaction was he'd be out for 12 weeks maximum which is not terribly far away," Mrs Moore added.

"The Arc is nine weeks away, Thanks to everyone who has be kind enough to ask after Ryan and we are passing on their good wishes."
