It’s that time of year again, when we cower from the sun like albino vampires. The a/c is cranked up to the max, the shades are drawn and all we want to do is immerse ourselves in the world of the Wii or watch back-to-back box-sets until our eyeballs ache.
The thing is, if you’re going to spend vast amounts of time on your backside you need to do it in comfort. This could involve arranging every pillow and cushion in your house into a giant human nest on the floor, ensconcing yourself on the sofa or (our preferred option) going out and buying a smart new lounger.
And not just any lounger, either. We mean one that is not only comfortable but so stylish that you’ll feel like a modern-day emperor on a throne. Between Le Corbusier’s LC4 and Arne Jacobsen’s Egg chair there has been an entire furniture aesthetic aimed at the modern male in relaxation mode. Admittedly, these iconic loungers come with a hefty price tag but the high street is flooded with inspired designs and imitations that are comfy and easy on the wallet.
Before you start, get your basics right. The base – the pod on which the lounger is set – should ideally be in brushed chrome or a stainless steel finish. It wears better and hides dust smarter than its glossy cousins. The upholstery should be in leather (more expensive) or what they call ‘technical leather’ – hardwearing, imitation leather. Again the latter takes less maintenance and is more cost effective.
Armed with this basic knowledge, head to ID Design for the finest in Scandinavian furniture. Its Hollywood and Angelina lines come with handy foot stools. Marina and Ikea have some great options.
For the wow factor, add a little colour with a bright red Merak chair, or go for the Snake Chaise Longue (both at ID Design) – it’s sensuous, super comfy and begs to be snoozed in.
