Manama: Science journalists from the Arab world constituted one-fifth of the participants at the World Conference of Science Journalists (WCSJ) in Doha, organisers said.
The figure indicates the growing importance of science journalism in the Arab region.
Organisers said that 726 journalists and scientists from 90 countries took part in the conference, Qatar Tribune reported on Thursday.
Europe had the highest representation with 27 per cent of the participants, followed by Africa with 21 per cent from Africa. The Arab world featured 20 per cent, ahead of North America with 17 per cent.
There was 11 per cent representation from Australasia while Latin America had the least number of participants with four per cent.
However, organisers said they would take steps to increase the participation from the South American region in the future.
The next conference will be held in June 2012, Jean-Marc Fleury, WCSJ executive director, said at the closing session of the seventh conference in Qatar.
The new president of the WFSJ is Vesa Niinikangas, from Finland.
