Dubai: Germany's Martin Kaymer is enjoying his hour in the big league of golfers. After finishing second to Tiger Woods at the Desert Classic here yesterday, Kaymer was more than pleased that he has managed to move up in the league among the men.

"I am perfectly satisfied with the performance here. That amazing victory in Abu Dhabi followed by this second place ... everything seems to be going as per plans," Kaymer told Gulf News as he waited for the presentation ceremony to commence.

Born in Dusseldorf, Kaymer turned professional in 2005 and he has already featured in the top 50 in the Official World Golf Rankings.

Two weeks ago he announced his arrival on the big stage with an amazing win in the Abu Dhabi Masters - his first win on The European Tour. But after that he sank a bit and even failed to make the cut the next week at the Qatar Masters in Doha.

'Bit confused'

"I was a bit confused honestly, but that weekend in Qatar where I failed to make the cut gave me enough time to think about what is happening. That short break, even though it is just the weekend, gave me time to see where I was heading ... and this quality time has helped me and my game as you can see," Kaymer said with a smile.

The 23-year-old German ended the day on 66 for 13-under, just one shot off Woods. "I thought I had a chance till the 17th hole and then I saw that he [Woods] was already 14-under."

"It is such a pity as I was giving it a try till the end. But then he played well and he deserves the title," he said.

Moving into the top league has not made Kaymer alter his schedule for the remainder of the season.

"The main thing is that I am enjoying my golf and I am having so much fun. Like the third round with Ernie [Els] is by far the best round I have played for the past three years," Kaymer recalled.

"He's such a nice guy and for sure he is a role model for me."
