Abu Dhabi: Arun D' Costa, an Australian-Indian who had been in a coma for the past two weeks following a road accident, died on Thursday at a hospital.

Kiran D' Costa, his twin brother, said: "Our mother who came from India to look after him is shocked and she says she will never go back to India. She has not come to terms with the situation. We don't know how to the break the news to our father, who is ill," said Kiran.

Arun's wife Wilma, 31 and their 11-month-old baby have not recovered from their injuries sustained from the accident. "We have decided not to tell the sad news to Wilma as she is not in a stable condition," said Leslie D' Costa, the elder brother of the deceased.

Apart from serious fractures to her legs, there is a fluid discharge from her injured nose. "Baby Andrea is comfortable with Wilma's mother who came from India to look after her," said Kiran. "Our sister is in deep shock because she never expected that such a joyous occasion would end in such a tragedy," he said. Arun, 36, reached Dubai with his family on January 3, to attend the christening ceremony of his younger sister's baby.

The family of three brothers and sister enjoyed their time in Dubai for two weeks visiting relatives and friends. But a trip to Abu Dhabi on January 15, the eve of their departure to Australia, ended in tragedy.

Leslie said although he was driving the car at a moderate speed, he does not remember anything about the accident. "Later police officials told me a trailer hit our car."

An Abu Dhabi police spokesperson told Gulf News, the driver of a trailer lost control of his vehicle due to the slippery road caused by the rain and moved to the middle lane from the right lane to hit the family's car.
