Abu Dhabi: President His Highness Shaikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan on Monday received a telephone call from Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh.

Saleh conveyed his apologies to Shaikh Khalifa for Sunday's UAE embassy incident in Sana'a, in which the UAE and foreign diplomats, as well as Abdul Latif Al Zayani, GCC Secretary-General, were under siege after a number of protesters surrounded the mission.

Meanwhile, a Yemeni presidential source expressed deep regret over the siege.

In a statement to Yemen news agency, the source termed the act by angry masses as "irresponsible and unacceptable'', underscoring that the UAE or its leadership and ambassador were not the target.

He affirmed the Yemeni leadership, government and the people hold in high esteem and regard the UAE leadership, government and people and highly value their brotherly supportive stances on the security, stability and unity of Yemen.

This incident, he stressed, will not effect, in any way, the close, firm and developing relations that bind the two brotherly Emirati and Yemeni peoples.
