Manama: Kuwait's parliament on Tuesday approved a government request to postpone for one year an investigation of the prime minister.
The voting was approved by 37 MPs out of the 47 present at the session and rejected by 10 lawmakers, Kuwait News Agency (Kuna) reported.
"The deliberation of the grilling of His Highness the Prime Minister is to be adjourned for a year unless the Constitutional Court made a rule earlier," said Gassem Al Khorafi, the parliament speaker.
The government based its request for the delay of Shaikh Nasser Al Mohammad's on provision 135 of the parliament's bylaw.
Minister of Oil and Minister of State for National Assembly Affairs, Mohammad Al Busairi made the request for the one-year-deal "unless the court would issue an explicit verdict regarding the topics included in the grilling, forwarded by MPs Ahmad Al Saadoun and Abdul Rahman Al Anjari, Kuna reported.
Al Busairi said the government stated, since the start of the current legislative term, that it wanted closer cooperation with the parliament, according to the constitution and the bylaws of the assembly.
The former government faced more than seven interrogation casesand dealt with them according to the constitution and the bylaws, despite certain constitutional flaws in some of the inquiries, Al Busairi said.
"Nevertheless, the Prime Minister and some of his ministers took to the stand and presented their arguments on constitutional bases for sake for revealing the facts," he said, quoted by Kuna.
"The government reiterates its stance that it will not deprive the MPs from the right to use Provision 100 of the Constitution that allows them to file for the grilling of any member of the government," he said.
