Nairobi: At least four people have died as angry mobs torched houses in a slum in the Kenyan capital in response to the killing of opposition MP Mugabe Were.

Mugabe Were, from beaten presidential candidate Raila Odinga's ODM party, was murdered outside his house in the early hours of Tuesday morning.

Meanwhile towns in the Rift Valley are witnessing fresh inter-ethnic fighting. Army helicopters fired on a mob of ethnic Kikuyus attacking Luo refugees trying to flee the town of Naivasha.

Crowds of people fled in panic as armed forces used tear-gas canisters and rubber bullets to disperse them.

Police on the ground had been unable to control the mob, which was looting and burning buildings in the Rift Valley town.

Government and the opposition are due to commence resolution talks on Tuesday afternoon. Former UN secretary genera, Kofi Annan, is due to mediate the talks.

President Mwai Kibaki condemned the killing, but urged Kenyans not to jump to conclusions about who had carried it out.
