Dubai: A woman went into labour near Safa Park on Monday while looking for a taxi to take her to hospital on a day that saw chaos on the roads.

Jemilah Al Zaabi, head of technical operations at Dubai Unified Ambulance Services, told Gulf News the woman was in the early stages of labour and was trying to find a taxi to take her to hospital. The incident occurred around noon.

"She was suffering from labour pains but could not get a taxi because of where she was, there was no way in. So she called for an ambulance and we sent her one to take her to the hospital," she said.

She added that the ambulance came and took the woman to Al Wasl Hospital quickly and safely.

Alternative routes

"The police had already provided us with alternative routes to the hospital," she said.

Jemilah said ambulances primarily provided transportation services to residents with minor medical cases, such as severe headaches and abdominal pains, on Monday.

"We received many calls from people asking for transportation help to the hospital for minor cases," she said.

She added the department suspended the Dh300 transport fee in non-emergency cases due to transportation difficulties.

The department had 61 ambulances and first responders patrolling Dubai, an addition of 11 emergency vehicles, in case of any emergencies related to the road closures.
