Sharjah: Police have arrested a man for smuggling drugs worth Dh18 million into the country.

The Arab suspect smuggled 600,000 tablets of the amphetamine brand Captagon, labelling the narcotics as diet pills.

Lieutenant-Colonel Yousuf Mousa Al Naqbi, director of CID, said that the amount seized has been the largest in the last few years.

"Large amounts of Captagon were confiscated in the past, but now they have re-emerged again into the country. The region is facing a challenge as drug gangs are attempting to reactivate their market, and are creating new ways to smuggle drugs through the border points. To prevent the drugs from entering, it is vital that there is strong cooperation between neighbouring countries," said Al Naqbi.

Police from a neighbouring country initially tipped-off the Ministry of Interior that a man was entering the country with illegal drugs and suspected that he had the intention to distribute them.

The Anti-Narcotics Unit at the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), Sharjah Police, immediately set up a team to monitor the suspect and set up a trap.
