Dubai: More than 250 of the world's finest athletes will be in Dubai for the 12th UIPM Biathle World Championships 2010 that will be held at Le Meridien Mina Seyahi Beach Resort and Marina this weekend.

Co-hosted by the Dubai International Marine Club (DIMC), the 12th UIPM Biathle World Championships 2010 consists of a swim in between two legs of running.

"The athletes start off by running one half of the total running distance before entering a 50-metre transition area to continue with the swim leg and followed by the second leg of the run," said Mihail Kouzev, the UIPM representative in the Middle East.

Biathle is one of the fastest growing sports in the world with the Dubai round attracting more that 250 participants from across the globe to the event that will take start tomorrow and end on Saturday.

Key support

The event has the support of the Dubai Sports Council and the Union Internationale de Pentathlon Moderne (UIPM), which is recognised by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) as the world governing body for the sport of Modern Pentathlon and Biathle.

Junior participants will run from between 500 metres and 1km, then swim between 50 metres and 100 metres. They will finish the race with the same running distance. Adults run either 1km or 1.5km, swim 100 metres or 200 metres and conclude with the same running distance again.

The Biathle consists of the two fundamental events of the Modern Pentathlon.

"The primary objective of the UIPM Biathle World Championship Dubai 2010 is to showcase the drive that Dubai and the Dubai Sports Council are encouraging the growth of new sports by promoting the sport and make it a sustainable and viable prospect for all people and especially the youth," Kouzev added.

Super Sports Event Management Services, a Dubai-based company specialising in local sporting events, will assist in organising and promoting the event on behalf of the UIPM.
