Manama: Kuwait has urged the international community to avoid linking terrorism with any religion in particular and to step up efforts to promote tolerance.

"Kuwait calls for concerted efforts to create a united front to fight terrorism and to boost the value of tolerance and peaceful coexistence between various civilizations," Mohammad Al Taqi, a member of Kuwait's permanent delegation at the UN, said. "We also call for setting out strict rules to punish anyone who disparages heavenly religions or denigrates religious leaders and sanctities," he said in his speech at a United Nations General Assembly legal committee on international efforts against terrorism.

Al Taqi ruled out a link between terrorism and religion and cautioned against the use of double standards in the fight against terrorism.

He added that Kuwait wants to spread noble human values among its people regardless of their religion. It encourages moderation, and suggests tackling the root causes of terrorism, especially economic, social and political conditions.

The Kuwait News Agency (KUNA) reported that the Kuwaiti diplomat said his country was genuinely interested in reinforcing international cooperation in the fight against terrorism through coordination with regional and international security agencies.

Al Taqi reiterated Kuwait's condemnation of all forms of terrorism regardless of their motives, stressing that it’s a criminal act that cannot be justified or condoned by any religion.
