Sharjah: A Dh35 million rainwater reservoir in Sharjah city is nearly complete, a senior member of the municipality's staff said on Sunday.

Salem Obaid Al Shamsi, Chairman of Executive Council at Sharjah Municipality, said: "The rainwater reservoir will be completed by the end of October, and will cater to several residential areas in Sharjah city, including Al Ta'awun, Buheira Corniche, Al Ghafia, near Sharjah Airport, and Al Shaab football club."

He said the municipality has been keen to finish building the rainwater reservoir at Government Square, before the winter showers, and said it would ease the burden on the city's network of drains.

Sharjah Municipality Director General Sultan Al Mualla told Gulf News that the rainwater reservoir would also catch run-off from the road leading to Al Dhaid.

The Sharjah-Al Dhaid highway was badly affected during rainfall across the city last year. "We want to curb the areas that were usually flooded during the rainy season, and we can assure residents that it will be completed by next month," Al Mualla said.

"Once the reservoir is completed, it will be able to contain a substantial amount of rainwater that will ensure a strategic flow of rainwater away from the city," he said. Municipality staff were still working on the project, he said.

Al Mualla also said Sharjah Municipality would clean out clogged drains in the coming weeks, to make sure the drain network could cope with rainfall. All the rainwater gathered would be used for horticulture and agriculture purposes.
