Nature's call: Without adequate public restrooms, workers are using the streets and alleyways between buildings as toilets. Gulf News reader Maria Angelica Escaff said: "This is unhealthy and a disgusting practice..." Image Credit: Maria Angelica Escaff/Gulf News Reader

We are in the new millennium and people are still suffering from a shortage of public facilities, such as toilets.

Municipal workers involved in the building of new roads and the development of Khalifa City B area in Abu Dhabi do not have toilets offered by their companies. The workers are seen using the street and other public areas in my neighbourhood as toilets.

This is a permanent problem, as it is happening every single day, while these men work in Khalifa City B and do not have any other place to go. This is unhealthy and a disgusting practice for all the people who live in this area. We go out of our home and stand on the patio, only to see men walking through the corridors between houses and hiding to do their business.

The worst part is the smell.

I urge the municipal authorities to please control this situation and provide public restrooms, as [they are] urgently needed.
