Muscat: The sultanate’s national carrier Oman Air suspended all flights to Europe over the weekend as a safeguard against the threat posed by volcanic ash spreading over large parts of the continent.

Scheduled flights to the United Kingdom, France and Germany were halted from Thursday through Saturday in line with advisories issued by air traffic authorities in Europe.

An official Oman Air’s spokesperson said, “We are doing everything we can to ensure our booked and stranded passengers are looked after in Muscat as well as overseas destinations. We want our passengers to rest assured that their safety is our utmost concern and we will do all we can to help alleviate the inconvenience caused by the disruption of their journey. We are closely monitoring the situation and hope to be returning to normal conditions as soon as possible.”

The official further added: “All passengers are advised to check the status of their flight before leaving for the airport. Oman Air will endeavour to keep you continuously updated as the situation evolves.”
