Dubai: Dubai Police arrested an Indian national against whom an Interpol red notice has been issued for allegedly murdering his wife in the south Indian state of Kerala.

The suspect, M.N.P, 34, also referred to as Shammi Kumar, is a Sharjah resident and has lived in the UAE for the past 12 years. He had travelled for a brief visit to Kerala on January 15 through Calicut International Airport and his wife, in her early 30s, was found hanging naked from a hook in the ceiling of room 204 at Everest Lodge on January 22.

The hotel manager informed the local police in the district of Payyanur that the door was latched from outside when he found the body of the woman, said Major Saed Abdullah Al Saady, Deputy Director of the Wanted Persons Department at Dubai Police.

The suspect had checked in the hotel on January 21 under the fake name of ‘Shyam Kumar', along with his wife and the youngest of his three children, a one-year-old girl.

The next day when his wife's body was found hanging, M.N.P and the child were missing, said Major Al Saady, quoting the case that was referred to him from India. He later fled to the UAE.

On January 26 an Interpol red notice was issued against the suspect on charges of premeditated murder of his wife.

These red notices allow the warrant to be circulated worldwide with the request that the wanted person be arrested with a view to extradition.

He was arrested a few days before the red arrest warrant was issued as a source close to the suspect tipped off Dubai Police of his suspicion that M.N.P had committed a murder, that was reported in one of the newspapers in Kerala, Maj Al Saady said.

"He [M.N.P.] informed us that he had gone to get grocery and when he returned to the hotel room he found his wife had committed suicide," said Maj Al Saady.

It is also alleged that the suspect used to torture his wife.

He is in Dubai Police custody and his case has been referred to the Public Prosecution.
