Manama: Controversial Lebanese singer, Haifa Wehbe, singer performed in Manama on Wednesday night in a show which has faced stiff opposition from certain parliament blocs.

The family-only concert featuring Haifa and fellow Lebanese performer Fadhel Shaker was organised by New York-based event management company Concerto International for the occasion of Labor Day.

Despite much political opposition, the show passed off peacefully.

Doors opened at the Gulf Hotel's Gulf Convention Centre at 8pm, and Haifa went on stage a little after 11pm wearing a low-cut but demure green dress.

She thanked the hundreds of fans who had gathered to see her for their support before kicking off the show with a song from her latest album.

Haifa then proceeded to woo her audience throughout the night. At one point, mixing humour and sarcasm, she even asked her fans if she was allowed to tell them that she loved them.

Haifa's appearance in Bahrain has been met with much objection from certain parliament blocs, who called for a ban on the singer.

Parliament first vice-chairman and Al Asala bloc president Ghanim Al Buainain, said several Arab countries had already banned her entry, adding that “Haifa is famous for her indecency and immorality and allowing her to perform would mean that we agree with her acts, which are not family-oriented, as organizers claim.''

"What people going to the concert would see is a corrupt woman shaking her body,'' he said.

More than thirty MPs voted in favour of banning Haifa's Bahrain debut at the weekly parliamentary session, in a strong warning to the government.
