Dubai: A 30-year-old woman claims she was raped in her apartment by a stranger in the early hours of Wednesday morning after she opened the door to him, a Dubai Police official said.

Major Mohammad Ahli, Director of the Criminal Prosecution Department of Dubai Police, told Gulf News the incident happened at around 4am when a man "randomly" knocked on the door of the Indian woman who lives in a building in Al Muraqqabat.

Brothel

According to Major Saeed Al Ayalli, acting director of the criminal investigation division of Dubai Police, the suspect, in his thirties, refused to confess to the crime initially. He had called the operations room of Dubai Police two hours before the incident to report the fact a brothel was operating in one of the flats in the same building where the woman lived but on a different floor.

Following investigations the flat showed no signs of operating as a brothel. However, police are still investigating the matter, he said while adding they still do not know why the suspect made the call to the operations room prior to the alleged crime.

"There isn't any connection between the victim and the suspect. He randomly knocked on doors. In fact before knocking on the victim's door he had tried another flat but no one answered. When he knocked on her door she opened the door to him that's when he forced himself into her flat," said Major Al Ayalli.

The suspect, who was arrested in his residence in Sharjah at 8am just a few hours after the rape, initially denied the charges but later confessed to police.

The suspect works as a janitor at a money exchange store in Sharjah and had driven in the early hours of Wednesday to commit the crime, said Major Al Ayalli while adding the suspect had not been under the influence of alcohol.

"I would like to urge the public that under no circumstances should anyone open the door to a stranger at this late hour of the night."

The victim tried to resist the suspect and he had minor injuries on his lower lip, said Major Al Ayalli.
