Brussles: The EU is questioning Israel about falsified European passports used in the assassination of a Hamas official that is suspected to be the work of the Israeli intelligence agency.

Spanish Foreign Minister Miguel Angel Moratinos says the EU is "extremely concerned" that suspects in the January 20 killing of Mahmoud Al Mabhouh carried fake EU passports.

"We are extremely concerned that European passports... can be used in a different manner for a different purpose," Spanish Foreign Minister Miguel Angel Moratinoswas quoted as saying to reporters as he arrived for a meeting with his EU counterparts in Brussels.

Israeli Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman was due to meet Moratinos and several fellow European foreign ministers in Brussels on Monday, seeking to reassure them over the use of British, Irish, French and German passports in the assassination of Mahmud Al Mabhuh in January.

"We are going to discuss it and I hope we will issue a statement expressing our concern about this situation," said Moratinos ahead of the talks.

He says he will ask Israeli Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman about that in the margin of an EU foreign ministers meeting Monday.

Al Mabhouh's body was found in a Dubai hotel room last month. Suspicion has fallen on a hit squad from Israel's Mossad spy agency.

Israel has linked Al Mabhouh to the smuggling of arms into Gaza and the slaying of two Israeli soldiers on leave.
