Ajman: Two baby girls were found abandoned in Ajman recently, the Ajman police chief announced.

Brigadier Ali Abdullah Alwan told Gulf News on Tuesday that an eight-month-old baby was found recently and another four-month-old baby was found abandoned near the beach in her carry cot a month ago.

Brigadier Alwan said that during the early hours of Tuesday, January 19, a passer-by spotted a baby who looked around three months old. She was awake in her carry cot and no one was near her.

"A passer-by contacted the operations room about an abandoned baby found on the Corniche. The police patrols found the baby who was transferred to Khalifa hospital in Ajman were she underwent medical checks," he said.

He said the baby was found on one of the benches at the seaside.

"Her features show that the parents of the baby girl or one of them could be a Chinese," he said.

Brigadier Alwan said prints from her hands and feet were taken for investigation purposes as they could help in identifying the parents. "We usually check with all hospitals and clinics in the emirates ... to find out if someone recently gave birth to a baby," Brigadier Alwan said.

He urged residents to supply police with any information about the baby, which may help them to find her parents.

Difficult to find

He said such cases of babies being abandoned happen in Ajman every now and then.

"Most of the time it is difficult to spot the parents but many times we were able to spot them," he explained.

Brigadier Alwan said most of the time people abandoned their babies near mosques, malls or any busy areas where the babies could be spotted easily.

According to a hospital source at the abandoned babies' ward at Khalifa hospital, there are many babies of different ages left behind by their parents.
