Dubai: This year's Terry Fox run in Dubai is aiming to break the Dh7 million barrier, with the run to be held on December 11.

More than Dh6 million has been raised to date for cancer research in the UAE since the run's inception.

"It is a tough target," says organising committee chairman, Dave Barette. "On average, over the past years, we have raised just over Dh500,000 with each run, so we are appealing even more strongly this year, for people to come out and support the run and at the same time give generously. There is no reason why we shouldn't surpass all previous records and break the Dh7 million target," he added.

"Mamzar Park is again the venue for the run as it provides a safe and spectacular backdrop for everyone taking part ... offering the beauty of one of Dubai's most stunning parks, dramatic sea-views and two other key ingredients — easy access from all parts of the Northern Emirates and an abundance of parking," Barette added.

Fun for family

All the money raised from the 2009 Dubai Terry Fox Run at Mamzar Park will go cancer research in the UAE. The Terry Fox Run is a family-oriented, fun-filled morning that welcomes all members of the community. Participants can walk, run, bicycle, rollerblade or use their wheelchairs or strollers along the 4.6 kilometre to 8.4 kilometre route. The event is non-competitive and organised completely by volunteers with all supplies donated by local supporters. There is no registration fee, no minimum donation and 100 per cent of the funds raised support cancer research at the UAE University in Al Ain.

Terry Fox was dubbed as one of the greatest Canadians who lived. He became a hero shortly after he was diagnosed with Osteosarcoma cancer in his right knee in 1977.

Cross-country run

Despite his right foot being amputated, Fox decided to run across Canada to raise awareness and money for cancer research.

His plan was to run more than 40 kilometres per day and reach Victoria, Canada's far west coast stopping along the way to speak and raise funds.

After 143 days, Fox was forced to stop when he found out that the cancer was spreading.

Before he died on June 28, 1981, Fox raised more than $24 million (about Dh88.1 million).
