Dubai: Luck often favours the fortunate, but in the case of a 54-year-old UAE resident it has been on his side for a while.

Zahid Atique - a Pakistani petrochemical engineer who has been in the UAE for over 25 years - hit the jackpot twice in a span of six weeks and became a National Bonds millionaire, bagging Dh2 million.

The happy news reached him at his worksite at an offshore oil rig through his friends.

Interestingly, his winning streak began when he started saving with the Sharia-compliant National Bonds saving scheme in 2006.

"I can only thank Allah for the wonderful situation he has placed me in. I retained my winnings of the first million-dirham prize with National Bonds, and won my second million from the same winning bonds.

"I plan to save my second million in National Bonds for the time being and will utilise a part of my winnings towards certain responsibilities and duties in the future," Atique said.

When asked about what encouraged him to save in National Bonds, Atique said there were two key factors that influenced his decision: "National Bonds Corporation is Sharia compliant and more importantly, it is co-owned by the Dubai Government which gave me a feeling of security.

"From the launch of this scheme, I had complete trust in National Bonds as a safe and rewarding scheme and this amazing win of Dh2 million in six weeks have justified my decision to save for securing my children's future."

Mohammad Qasim Ali, CEO of National Bonds Corporation, said: "It is yet another landmark moment for National Bonds that in our 50th draw we have a bondholder who wins a million simply because he saved with us the million he won a few weeks ago.

"His instinct to save again is a fine example of what we at National Bonds are trying to encourage: An ongoing saving habit."

Someone told me that National Bonds giving big prizes only for certificates more than Dh10,000 and small denominations are not included in the big draw? If this is the case smaller denominated certificates are used to pay those big ones. This is not fair.

With all due respect to National Bonds Corp. and congratulations to the Winner, could the method of drawing the winner be "justified publicly" and can we see this as a publicity stunt by National Bonds Corp. to attract further investors?

It's all fair!! It all depends on your luck. But I must admit that the number of prizes as compared to the number of bondholders is way too less!!!

I agree with Radhika Sagar - The way national bonds operate is that the number of chances increase with the amount of investment in which case the gentleman who holds bonds worth two million dirhams will always have a lot more chances to win than any other participant. This is not fair!!!
