Abu Dhabi: More than 1,200 people are expected to participate in the 14th annual Abu Dhabi Terry Fox Run (TFR) taking place on Friday at the Abu Dhabi Corniche. All proceeds from the event will go towards funding a cancer research project in the UAE.

Over three million people worldwide have participated in a Terry Fox run. Over $400 million has been raised worldwide over the past 20 years to fund cancer research.

Last year, Abu Dhabi ranked the second highest when it came to raising funds. More than Dh775,000 was raised and the UAE's combined runs put it first among 29 participating countries in terms of revenues raised, and second in terms of overall number of participants, with approximately 12,000 people taking part.

All the money raised at the Abu Dhabi event will be given to the Faculty of Medicine at the UAE University.

The run is in memory of Terry Fox, who was diagnosed with cancer when he was 18. While being hospitalised he was so moved by the suffering of cancer patients that he decided to run across Canada.

The Terry Fox Run in Abu Dhabi will be held on February 20. The run starts at the Sheraton Abu Dhabi Hotel and Resort car park at 10am. Registration is from 8am.
