Beijing China plans to rebuild the county seat for one of the worst-hit areas in last week's earthquake that struck Sichuan province in a new area.

Xinhua News Agency yesterday quoted Beichuan Communist Party chief Song Ming as saying "safety is the top priority in selecting a new location and reconstruction". He said the government will build a monument and memorial to quake victims at the old location.

Back to school

Children returned to school in some of China's worst quake-hit districts yesterday as the country struggled to put normalcy back into the lives of survivors. In just one day and using prefabricated building materials, local authorities hammered together a temporary school for children living around Zundao town, near the city of Mianzhu. Dozens of schools collapsed on May 12, killing thousands of children sitting at their desks at the time of the quake. Some of the grieving families took advantage of the return to school yesterday to hold small memorial services.

Olympic torch

The Olympic torch resumes its journey through China today after a three-day national mourning for victims of the earthquake.

So far, the torch has had a smooth relay in mainland China, uninterrupted by the protests over Tibet and human rights that dogged parts of its international tour. Agencies
