Kuala Lumpur: Malaysian authorities will establish an independent panel to investigate the video of a Chinese woman's abuse in police custody that triggered a national outcry, the prime minister said on Monday.

"I have decided that an independent inquiry will be carried out," Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi told national news agency Bernama.

"I will speak to the relevant people to confirm whether they will agree to become members of the panel."

In the camera-phone footage, the naked woman is forced to squat while holding her ears in a cell as a policewoman looks on.
