Sharjah International Airport has geared up its facilities to cater to increased demand for Haj flights.

"We expect to have up to eight Haj outbound flights this year from Sharjah, with the operators being Gulf Air and Saudia," explained Ali Salem Al Midfa, director, administration and commercial department. Last year saw six such flights carrying pilgrims from the airport.

The official explained these would be in addition to around 50 other Haj flights by Indian Airlines and other carriers transiting the airport.

Earlier Dr Ghanem Al Hajri, director general, said the airport has upgraded its services to deal with all the anticipated requirements of Haj pilgrims, contractors and airlines.

"Considering that the pilgrims have a long journey ahead, we have made every effort to extend our cooperation to help them, especially bearing in mind our senior citizens," he said.

These include technical services for the pilgrims both in Sharjah and Jeddah; incentives for the carriers; and special personnel at both airports to ease the pressure on contractors.

The airport has roped in a number of sponsors - including oil heavyweight Adnoc - for special offers.

The officials explained the aim is have passengers opt for Sharjah airport by making the pilgrimage a memorable experience.
