Australia weathered the Czech Republic storm to salvage a 1-1 draw in a Group C game at Rashid stadium yesterday.

Australia and the Czechs are tied for second place with a point each, while Brazil leads with three points.

In a quick-paced game, the Czechs showed purpose in the early stages as they mounted raid after raid in search of a goal.

They were rewarded for their efforts in the 24th minute when David Limbersky scored with in a low, stiff volley after accepting a free kick from Petr Sima.

The Czechs could have been two goals clear on the half hour but Ladislav Valesak's effort hit the upright.

After the break it was the Australians who snatched the initiative and kept pressing for the equaliser even as the Czechs tried to bolster their slender lead.

The Young Socceroos got the equaliser just four minutes into the session when skipper Scott McDonald headed into an empty net following a corner.
