A fashion designer who left the country then returned with a new name and passport after embezzling Dh14,500 from his former employer in Dubai has been arrested working for an embroidery shop in Abu Dhabi.

The 33-year-old Filipino fashion designer, identified as J.D., had left Dubai last year after stealing Dh14,500 from the embroidery shop where he worked.

On July 2 last year, the designer's former sponsor, N.A., 40, a UAE female national, discovered that J.D. rented some wedding gowns and kept the money. When the woman confronted him, J.D. said he spent the Dh14,500 and promised to repay it in instalments. The national woman asked him to sign a confession as well as a contract promising to repay the money.

A few weeks passed and the fashion designer had still not paid anything. The victim finally reported the matter to the authorities. The police searched for the fashion designer, and learnt he had returned to the Philippines.

On May 25 of this year, an informant tipped police that he was working for an embroidery shop in Abu Dhabi. The police raided the store and took the man into custody. While questioned by Dubai police, J.D. admitted he stole only Dh2,000. He said the police forced him to confess to stealing Dh10,000. The Dubai Court of First Instance sentenced him to three months in jail.
