Kerrin McEvoy landed his first winner at this year's Glorious Goodwood meeting on Thursday but it was not in the famous all-blue colours of Godolphin, who retain the talented Australian rider. McEvoy was doing duty for veteran trainer Clive Brittan aboard Deveron in the European Breeders Fund New Ham Maiden Fillies Stakes.

Yesterday he secured his second win of the meeting, this time for team Godolphin, with Mamool.

McEvoy has ridden 34 winners in the UK this season, including 12 for Godolphin trainer Saeed Bin Surour. The 24-year-old former Australian champion is having his second season in Britain. Last year he rode 43 winners overall.

McEvoy, who joined Godolphin as deputy to Frankie Dettori, had ridden over 500 winners in his native Australia including 8 Group 1s. His biggest win came in 2000 when he won Australia's most famous race, the Melbourne Cup with Brew.

Dettori is currently on the injured list, after suffering a broken collarbone earlier this month.

As many as seven jockeys are in the running for the top jockey award at Glorious Goodwood at the end of the fifth day of the festival which ends today. Martin Dwyer, Mick Kinane, Adrian Nicholls, Seb Sanders, Kieren Fallon, Joe Fanning and Kerrin McEvoy have all won two races each.

Fallon won the title last year amassing six winners. It was the third time that the Irishman was leading rider at Goodwood. In 1998 he rode an incredible eight winners at the meeting.

Mark Johnston, who has a remarkable record at Goodwood, leads the trainer's table with three wins. Over 18 trainers have landed one winner.

Johnston, a Scot who is based at the history north of England racing centre Middleham, has twice been champion trainer in the past and looks certain to succeed again this year.
