People's Democratic Party (PDP) chief Abdul Nasser Madani yesterday completed seven years in a Coimbatore jail in the neighbouring state of Tamil Nadu.

Madani was jailed on March 31, 1998 in connection with a serial bomb blast.

He has not been released on parole despite protests from his supporters and human rights activists.

Madani's supporters say that his health has deteriorated and he is suffering from several ailments. Though Madani earlier used to move around using an artificial leg, he does not have one now. He is now dependent on a wheelchair.

Madani's supporters say that all other accused in the bomb case have been granted parole. They added that he has already been in jail for longer than any punishment he could receive for the crime he is accused of.

Madani's father, T.A. Abdulsamad, said in Kochi that there was a conspiracy to murder his son in prison.
